Often finding out about what’s happening in Christchurch is as annoying as having the gas run out mid-bbq, it’s not pretty and you’re often surrounded by a bunch of drunken hungry people… actually that pretty much sums up the Christchurch town scene when there are no good gigs to goto.
So I’m going to help alleviate your Christchurch Gig Guide woes with a Christchurch Gig Guide Guide.
Christchurch Gig Guides You Should Know
I have yet to find a Christchurch Gig Guide that has all of the events that each individual gig guide has. I’m tempted to use my elite scripting and aggregation skills to write a mashup script to bring it all together… meh, really can’t be bothered, so here it goes…
EventFinder.co.nz - Christchurch Gigs
I’ve just started using this website more and more, it has frequent giveaways to upcoming events and you can easily add information about a gig if they don’t have it in their database (can you beleive they didn’t have Andy C or Cheap as Chips in there?).
Recommended for: The big events that are coming up, finding friends to go to gigs with and setting up an “I’m going to…” list of events so you don’t forget about them.
RDU Guides - Specifically the Gig Guide
This Gig Guide is elaborated on if you tune in to RDU (98.5) I’m not sure what times they do the gig guide on their shows, but you tend to hear it at about 9 o’clock in the mornings. You’ll be the first to know about any Indie acts that come to Christchurch, they also cover Dub, Drum n Bass, Hip Hop and a smattering of other genres. You wont find commercialized crap in these listings… which is a good thing.
Recommended for: Finding something to do on a Wednesday night. The nice people at RDU will often find you something to do most nights, and if it’s not music they’ll also recommend a good movie or arts festival to take a peek at. Aren’t they nice?
Just Another Gig Guide (Online) for Christchurch is on its way to becoming as handy as its pocket-sized hardcopy friend that we’ve all used on numerous weekends. This is the guide I turn to, to tie it all together, it takes on a venue approach as opposed to a genre listing so you get a good “fill in the gaps” experience.
Recommended for: Making sure you know exactly what’s going down every night of the week. To be used in conjunction with the other Gig Guides
This is definitely something to keep your eyes on, I’ve been using last.fm a LOT lately so if nothing else you’ll see me diligently adding my favorite events to their gig guide. If you haven’t discovered last.fm yet I urge you to go there, get signed up and start scrobbling. You’ll be so glad you did.
Recommended for: Well… nothing yet… but once it finds its feet you’ll be told about what events are coming up that you’re likely to be interested in, you wont need to go searching for them!
Well, that’s it!
